Keeping Warm this winter

This is culled from my recent guestblog post with the Advertiser Newspaper Group. Here's the link to my blog with them Design Noteblog. I wrote this just before Christmas. Enjoy.

Winter Warmers - Get your fireplace going

Just less than a week to go and it’ll be Christmas!  By now the stocking fillers must be overflowing with delightful presents, the Christmas tree glowing and taking up its rightful residence, needles and all. I bet your homes are decorated all over with reminders of what’s to come!

As it is winter and we have had snowfall already, our homes need to be
nicely warmed up and cosy. There are many ways of heating up a room and this winter warmer post is going to be about fireplaces.
Fireplaces are becoming a comeback hit with more and more people reviving old and unused inbuilt ones. With the age of central heating, fireplaces had been pushed to the wayside with many homeowners blocking or covering up original fireplaces and chimneys to make their interiors more aesthetically appealing.
According Dawn Carritt, a historic home expert and director of Jackson-Stops & Staff, while speaking with the Daily Telegraph: “The fireplace has made a real comeback. There was a period in the second half of the 20th century when it was thought to have become irrelevant........... Today everyone wants to restore and refurbish. This has meant the preservation ...... of the architectural ‘black box’: the fireplace..... The fireplace is the fingerprint of the house.”
There are many types of fireplaces to choose from if you are looking at getting something new or just simply giving an old unused one a new lease of life
If you like the natural glow and crackle of an open log fire then the traditional cast-iron fireplace is the one for you. This type of fireplace would already be built into the walls of your home.  Always have a good fireguard, be it metal or even better a glass one. And don’t forget the log basket and tools.
Alternatively you could have a single or multi fuel stove installed. They use wood pellets, electric or even gas -central heating. So very modern, contemporary and they create a very inviting focal point.

They can be left free-standing or built into the brick-work like the cassette or inset stoves. If that’s not your style you can mount them on the wall. Leaves one spoilt for choice really.

Another good thing about having a working fireplace is that it actually adds value to your property. More and more prospective homebuyers are adding ‘a fireplace’ to their tick list and it can be an important factor in their decision making.
